This quote is very much based on the famous line from the brilliant Monty Python film ‘The life of Brian’.
One of the subjects under occupation by the Italians asked the assembled group ‘What have the Romans ever done for us?’ He then smugly sits down not expecting any answers as he wrongly believed there were no actual positives to this situation.
However, over the next few minutes the crowd begin to shout out a multitude of real benefits including the food & wine, safety at night, the roads, refuse collection and so on!
The point is, we have experienced (and are still very much in the middle of) a situation that none of us have been in before with Covid-19. We have been in various recessions over the years and also downturns, but the current situation is really ‘unprecedented’ as is the current common term.
So as the economy hopefully picks up in the future or even during these early days, the need to get business into our venues is absolutely paramount. Some of the ‘regular’ clients will return, some wont.
There will be ‘old’ contacts to renew but unfortunately, they will not all be still working in these roles. Therefore the need to increase the pipeline of business and work on new contacts is more important than ever before.
How do we do this? By being pro-active with our sales.
Venues need to be out there physically when possible, meeting regular clients and agents, and also looking at bringing in new business from as yet untapped markets.
So if we need a fully functioning, well trained sales team why are so many sales people being let go by venues who are desperate to get the business moving again and will need to be attracting in new revenues streams?
Who will now be out there getting in touch with these contacts if the sales teams have been disbanded?
What have sales people ever done for us?
If you have nobody out there working on your behalf you will soon find out. The venue may be Covid-19 ready but ultimately unfortunately pretty empty!
