There was excitement in the air when the organisers of this month’s Tour of Britain cycle race approached Newark Showground as a potential location for the sprint finish of the event’s Nottinghamshire stage. The 86-acre property offers a campus of eleven versatile buildings and is the latest addition to Trident’s venue collection.

Newark Showground Sales executive Nick Mendham, a cycling enthusiast long before it became so fashionable, regularly arrives at work windswept and lycra-clad after a short 18-mile ride from home. He also cycles over 100 miles a week with the Vale of Belvoir Cycling Club and pursued this particular lead with some enthusiasm.

“Our local council decided the stage should finish in Newark’s historic town centre, which is understandable,” Nick conceded, “but we supported the event anyway mounting a yellow bicycle on our forthcoming events board and created an opportunity for TV helicopters covering the race by mowing and painting a huge bicycle on our grass. I did manage to see the race at two points on the day itself.”

The showground team didn’t spend too long rueing the missed opportunity but simply re-focused on its busy year-round calendar of conferences, exhibitions, dinners, parties, rallies and sporting events – some using its unique combination of indoor and outdoor spaces.

Nick added: “We recently closed one of our most successful trading years ever and look forward to working closely with Trident on various projects over the coming months – including an agency Fam Day on November 7th.
