How the Conference Cambridge venue Downing College works to reduce environmental impact and increase sustainability...
Downing College has been recognised and praised for having several eco-friendly goals including minimising waste and pollution, reducing water use and encouraging low-carbon transport.
The venue, located in Cambridge,  is regularly recognised for its commitment to comply fully with environmental legislation and officially approved codes of practice. In June 2014, Downing College received a Gold Award by the Green Tourism Business Scheme for outstanding performance as a Green Tourism site for conferences.
With over 2000 members in the UK, Ireland and Canada, the Scheme is regarded by many as the largest, most established sustainable grading programme in the world. The College was scored across 10 categories to judge its green credentials – from the use of environmentally-friendly paper, cleaning products and toiletries to the provision of wildlife and cultural activities.
The assessor highlighted a number of areas of excellence including the Howard Theatre as a sustainable conference venue, noting the adoption of low-energy lighting throughout the accommodation, the use of local, organic, vegetarian and Fair Trade options used in catering and the provision of electric vehicle charging points on site.
